2008 Grouseland Old Tippecanoe Contest

Quite by accident, a few days ago I turned a page in The Quilter magazine to find a photograph of a block I had entered in a contest posed by the Grouseland Foundation in Vincennes Indiana. I had been encouraged to enter by my friend Judy Morton, a moving force in the block challenge. We were encouraged to use traditional patterns or design our own. I came across Susan McCord's wonderful Harrison Rose design and knew at once this would by my entry. Of course her rendition was very large and mine needed to be small so the finished square is 1/4 the size of the original.
I was surprised and thrilled when I received a call from Judy to announce that I had won second prize! Each of the committee members was kind enough to get on the phone and congratulate me personally. I was invited to come for the presentation and show. I was sceptical, but my husband said, "How can you not go?" So we got in the car and went!! I am so glad I did. They were so glad to see me and i was made to feel like a celebrity. I met many of the other participants and attended the quilt show.
I also must say that it is fun to see some of my work in print.

The Applique Academy

I February , 2009 I will be teaching for the fifth year at the Applique Academy in Williamsburg, VA. I hope you will join me or any of the teachers in this wonderful venue. An atmosphere of support surrounds both student and instructor. We will stay and take or present instruction in The Williamsburg Hospitality House, two blocks from Colonial Williamsburg and across the street from the College of Williamsburg and Mary. It gets no better.
This is " Friendship's Keepsake". This is included in my workshop offerings for The Applique Academy which takes place February 10- 16, 2009. This is the my two day "add a day class". I almost want to call it " Vase With an Attitude!" because the placement of the handles indicate a short fuse!

"My Roses For You" is an eight inch square which offers technique in ruching, ultra suede applique, folded roses and more. This is a one day workshop.

Finally, my four day main conference class, called "And Then There Were Flowers" This is a wonderfully enjoyable design to create, expressive of all that I love about Baltimore applique'. Mine is not a from scratch creation but inspired by designs from vintage quilts.I hope to see some of you in Williamsburg, but if not I hope you enjoy my work and thank you for dropping by. Nadine

MOKA

MOKA is the name of a special quilt study group with members from the states of MO, Oklahoma, Kansas and Arkansas. MOKA! Formed February 28, 2003 at a meeting in Joplin,MO, MOKA meets three times a year where its members arrange special programs and train themselves in the history of quilt making. Our members are dedicated to learning as much as possible about this very special part of women's history. We count among the members, women who participated in the state quilt searches and wrote the books about these searches. We are teachers, lecturers, book writers, pattern designers and above all a little obsessed with quilts. Our meetings usually have a theme such as Hawaiian quilts, Redwork, Applique, red and green quilts, catalogs, kit quilts and more.

This summer we met in Columbia, MO to learn about and see family quilts.

A Flowering of Friendship

This is a design inspired by the complex appliqué of the Baltimore album period. I tried to include as many of the elements I admire as possible without overdoing the finished block.
